Through the Palms, Original Tropical Sunset Oil Painting by Artist Donna Fox
What I love about this painting is where the sun ended up.
Look at the tall palms on the left. The glow comes up right through the fronds, so the tree is cradling it, and it looks like the sun could settle in there and set for the night with nobody rushing it along. That was the feeling I was chasing the entire time I was painting, and everything else in the piece is built to serve it.
Two islands lean in from either side and leave a channel open between them, inviting you to travel straight out through the gap, past the palms, to the water and the sunset waiting beyond it. Then the light comes back at you, down the surface of the water, a bright coin of gold in the foreground with the whole channel lit pink around it, all the way to the bottom edge of the canvas.
The sky is doing what tropical skies do at that hour, which is show off. Coral and magenta down at the waterline, deep cobalt up top, and clouds stacked between them catching everything at once, cream on one side and violet on the other. And somehow, through all of that color, you still know you’re looking at clouds.
The palms and the island growth are almost black against all of it. That's on purpose. Glow only reads as glow when there's something dark sitting next to it.
20 x 16 inches, oil on canvas. Available only as the original.
