About Donna Fox
The front page tells you what I believe: the world is more magical than it first appears. This page tells you who is behind that claim.
I’m Donna Fox. I’m a fine artist in Las Vegas, Nevada and I’m on a mission to go from hobbyist to professional artist. In public, one painting at a time, with the whole thing documented.
What I paint
Original paintings in oil, acrylic and mixed media, watercolor and sketching and collage. I’ve never met a medium I didn’t like. What holds it all together is the subject, the real world. I don’t paint fantasy worlds, I paint this one, only a little brighter. Flowers that dance, teacups with memories of conversations, or a raven that knows a secret it’s not sharing.
There is purple in nearly every one of my paintings. Sometimes you can spot it. It’s mixed into all of my skin tones. Sometimes it’s hiding under three layers of paint, influencing everything that came after.
How I Got Here
I spent years building businesses and leading marketing teams, helping other people bring their ideas into the world, but keeping my own interests and passions on hold. Finally, I’d had enough.
I made the leap in 2025 when I drew a line in the sand: I would stop treating art like a hobby and start treating it like the profession I wanted it to be.
I am currently training through the Milan Art Institute’s Mastery Program, and I paint in my studio in Las Vegas.
The artists who shaped how I see are from my childhood. Dr. Seuss, Disney’s animators and Norman Rockwell. These are all artists who found humor in everyday moments, personality in ordinary objects, and magic hiding in plain sight. I’ve been chasing that way of seeing ever since.
The part that surprises people
I have aphantasia. No mind’s eye. When I close my eyes there is no picture, just words, really. So I learn what things look like by building a verbal lexicon of facts: What makes a robin look like a robin, the way a jaw connects to the skull.
People assume aphantasia disqualifies you from being an artist. It doesn’t. It just changes how you get there.
Here’s a video where I explain what aphantasia is and how it impacts me as an artist.
Growing Community
On the front page I talk about how creating art is only part of the dream, and the other part is building a community where creativity flourishes.
While my dreams are huge, they are already underway. I lead the Las Vegas chapter of Urban Sketchers, and if you’re local and want to draw on location with friendly people, come find us!
Where I Show Up
Here are a couple places where you can find me:
YouTube- this is my favorite platform. I publish videos documenting my journey from hobbyist to professional artist. Each week I paint or draw something while sharing what I’ve learned along the way. Subscribe to my channel here.
Substack- I publish two newsletters- the urban sketching one linked in the button above, and one about my art itself, including The Studio- an upgraded paid substack that goes deep into my business of being an artist. You can read that here.
Instagram- Less talking, more paintings! Get all the juicy final visuals and sketches in progress here.
