I chose this reference because of the rainbow light, I wanted the challenge of painting something white that really is every color of the rainbow but still reads as white. This is one of those rare paintings where I love every bit of it, even the imperfections.
There is magic in the sheen of the white strokes of the background. Character in the flip of the curled leaf.
The part I would point at is the shadow. It is nearly black, cut in hard against all that soft color, and it is the only reason the rose reads as sitting in real light instead of floating. I put it in early and then spent the rest of the painting resisting the urge to soften it. I think it was the right call.
Oil on canvas, 12 x 12 inches. Painted in Las Vegas, August 2026. Signed on the back.
Reflected Love, because that is what a white rose actually does. It gives back every color in the room.
