Smell the Coffee Brewing | Premium Matte Paper Print with a Wooden Frame
This painting exists because of a street sign that isn't in it anymore.
I chose the reference by feeling. Seven or eight photos made the first cut, and I couldn't pick between them until I stopped asking which one was prettiest and started asking how each one made me feel. Six dropped out instantly. This one felt warm. It reminded me of Philadelphia, where I grew up just across the bridge. Those soft mornings when the block is still waking up, you can smell coffee in the air, and somewhere a bakery truck is delivering bread.
The thing that first caught my eye was a little red sign in the lower corner. So imagine me an hour into the painting, finally really looking at it and seeing the red sign was actually a NO ENTRY symbol. The painting was literally saying "you are not allowed." I couldn't unsee it. Someone is going to hang this street in their home and look at it for twenty years, and I want that person to feel invited in. So I repainted the sign. It's a yellow SLOW sign now. Take your time on this street.
Then the yellow had to travel, so your eye would too. It bounces from the sign to the café awning across the street (that café is where the coffee's brewing, and it gave the painting its name), down the block to a golden Philadelphia license plate, into a car, and up to the flowering bush in the top corner. Under all of it is the morning light, that pink and lavender wash the sun puts on a street before anyone's really awake.
The SLOW sign is my version of stop and smell the flowers. Slow down. Smell the coffee. Notice the light, the shadows on the ground, the sky peeking through the trees.
